Games that design themselves
The Unholy Trinity, as it were, of the rise of a dastardly machine dystopia are, essentially, these:
- A highly functional and robust mechanical system, such that it could crush human bones like so many clusters of grapes, for instance
- A deviously ornate and subtly nefarious Artificial Intelligence programming or "brains", if you will, such as might be possessed by Gary Kasparov after a week long turpentine bender
- A corrupt priesthood of deeply deluded man and maid-servants willing to use their dark and sorcerous powers to midwife these abominable dark lords into being, like the species-betraying fellows in the following, bone-chilling, tale
GarageGames was founded by four industry veterans in 2001 with the goal of disrupting the games industry with quality development tools and “upsetting the dominant retail / publisher distribution model.” Their licensees include big names like Electronic Arts, IBM, Sony, Microsoft, and NASA, to name a few.
Their Torque gaming engine technology is available for nearly every platform. Supporting both 2D and 3D games, it is one of the most licensed engines in the games industry.
What more appropriate platform for a new type of game –- one that is not designed by any one game designer –- but one that algorithmically combines the game play experiences of thousands of players to create a new game.
The unseemly method by which the Evil Robots will wargame their nefarious plan before unleashing it on us in "meat-space"...
